Guys, I'm having some ISP trouble (since yesterday, actually). Customer service says it'll be fixed very soon, and I'll try to make it tonight, but if I don't, now you know why.

While I'd love to get a shot at the loot (esp. since we need it for Turn 4), you guys can go on ahead if you wish.

Hmm... This is sort of a toughie.

Healers don't really have rotations, per se - instead you should think of your skills as a sort of toolbox; you have a set of tools, some for general use and others for very specific purposes.

What sets a great healer apart from merely good healers is that great healers know when to use which tool for which situation.

For example - using 2x Cures to top off a tank is ok, but if you know there's massive incoming raid damage, then why not pop Divine seal so you only use one Cure to top off the tank, then use Medica pre-casted so that once the raid damage comes you have Medica popping almost immediately.

As a more concrete example - let's take Titan HM. I see a lot of healers casting Medica for the first stomp, but I've found that it's actually more useful to go into Cleric stance for the first Medica if you're relic+1 with good gear - damage is low enough that cleric stance medica will still heal everyone, but you avoid overhealing (thus less aggro) and you can also get a few hits in Titan at the same time.

There's also some decisions to make when dealing with multiple tumults -

If you have no CDs aside from Seal available, then you wanna use Medica -> Medica II because medica casts that bit faster; using Medica II first might have some people dead before the heal lands. But if you have Presence of Mind/Swiftcast (and you know no one's gonna need a Raise), then suddenly Medica II -> Medica makes more sense because even if you have to interrupt the Medica cast, the regen from Medica II will top people up after a bit of time, although you might need to spot Cure someone who is particularly low and is prone to getting hit by plumes.

TL:DR - DPSing is a science, and so you have rotations to optimize your damage. Healing is an art; it's all about efficiency and knowing when to use the right skill for the right situation. It's much less structured.

Best healing advice I can give you is to familiarize yourself with all your skills; find out which skill is best used for this situation; and also know the fight - don't just babysit health bars and play whack-a-mole with them. Take some time to know the fight itself and learn to anticipate high damage phases you need to save mana and cooldowns up for, lull phases where you can recover mp and burn phases where you may need to help DPS.

Check it out, guys.

There've been a lot of clarifications to upcoming balance changes. I'm looking forward to them!

Ideally, a healer should be using Cleric+DPS to help push a fight to end faster.

THAT SAID, in fights that really matter (i.e. long, protracted fights with a lot of incoming raid damage and multiple tank spikes), keeping track of everyone's HP, upcoming incoming damage, which target should be DPSed, avoiding AoEs, whether or not cleric stance is toggled on or off, among other things (when to refresh Regen, managing mana), dropping the DPS side of the equation will be the best way to raise chances of success, especially for fights unfamiliar to you.

No group will question a healer who doesn't DPS in order to keep on top of heals - groups will definitely question a healer who misses a clutch heal because they wasted a second on toggling Cleric Stance off, or who ran OOM too soon because they popped too many holies forgetting that SoS is still far from a recast.

TL:DR; be comfortable in "just" healing fights/dungeons, especially ones you don't know. Go for DPS when you're very comfortable in the fight/dungeon already and you know that you can contribute damage without wiping the party. This includes knowing the tank's capabilities, esp. when on DF or running with a certain tank for the first time.

FFXIV: A Realm Reborn / World First Twintania Kill
October 29, 2013, 12:25:59 AM
Congratulations to the guys at BlueGartr for World First twintania.

Their Main Tank only has two slots that aren't iLvl 90. o_O;

I guess for most groups it will have to be iLvl 90 on all slots before Twintania can be done comfortably. Guess here's what we have to look forward to a few months from now!

I'm fine with that, although please edit your post:

Dragoon set is Maiming, Monk is Striking, and Bard is Aiming.

That said, for rings MNKs and DRGs tend to have one Maiming, one Striking since they're both unique and designed for Melee classes.

Bench Rules

Whenever possible, people in the bench take priority over others when the static group needs a slot filled.

Instances when pulling from the bench are allowed:

- Someone misses a fixed raiding night
- Slots need to be filled for a Monday Night "Just before the reset" raiding session (as an added emphasis, these Monday sessions may last no longer than 5 minutes before the reset; no exceptions).

In case there are none from the bench that can fill the required slots for the party to proceed, then the party will call from FC chat. In case none can fill the need, the party may then draw from the server.

As stated in a prior post, players from the bench may roll on loot for the job they are currently using to raid with the static group.

Loot Rules

General Rules

Any loot that drops is judged solely on the job the person used to run the raid.

In cases where two or more people are eligible for a piece of loot, eligible people are allowed to roll Need. The winner of the roll is required to pass on the next piece(s) of loot falling under the same criteria until everyone elligible has gotten a piece.

e.g. BRD1 and BRD2 roll on a chestpiece. If BRD2 wins the roll, the next BRD loot goes to BRD1. Both then proceed to alternate on pieces. If instead there were three BRDs, then BRD2 would have had to pass on the next two pieces.

Pieces that are not currently equippable by the mix of jobs running the instance are allowed to be greeded by anyone interested in the drop.

Passing on Loot

Any member may at any time elect to pass on a loot roll. They must, however, declare the pass prior to actually clicking the option. This is to avoid instances where all parties eligible decide to pass on the loot for some reason, and the piece goes to a greed roll, thus wasting the drop.

Exceptions

Exception 1: People from the bench or who were pugged are allowed to roll Need on pieces they are eligible to roll Need for and do not currently posses.

Exception 2: The group as a whole may decide to give a piece of loot to a member for any reason (because it will help progression more than if it went to another member, for exemplary performance, etc., etc.). These cases require the approval of all members potentially impacted by said decision.
