I'm currently using onboard sound, so just wondering if you guys have any dedicated sound cards to recommend.
I am using Asus Xonar Essence STX and liking it so far but it is quite outdated already. Bought this card when I DIY my PC 2 years ++ back.

Here is another sound card, for gaming: http://www.asus.com/ROG/ROG_Xonar_Phoebus/
Do a little research and you will find that the Asus Xonar Essence series sound cards are one of the best in the market. :)

ya, was looking at this card too but like you mentioned it's kind of outdated. Then i saw Creative recently came out with the Sound Blaster Z, Zx and ZxR but people say Creative doesn't produce quality products anymore. kind of in a dilemma now.

Outdated but its of a top quality product. And yes.. Creative used to be one of the best but they are going downhill.. You may consider the card I stated on my 2nd post. That is the newer one.
im using Asus Xonar D2x

i bought the card 3 years ago @ 299 @ SLS. Today the price still around that price @ 285.
The reason i bought it was that i had a home theatre installed from Sony 5.1 HT. So i wanted to integrate it with my PC and just nice the card at that time had a SPDIF in and out so i can connect my PS3 using optical cable to my card and output it to my Home Theatre. The only hassle is if i want to experience 5.1 sound on my PS3 i need to boot my computer and switch the SPDIF to listen to the In Port via the windows software.
Of course my PC and PS3 are connected to the HDTV via HDMI so if i just want a stereo sound i just have to switch the sound settings on the PS3 from optical > HDMI so i don't need to on my com.
With regards to Xonar STX, does the software interface allow me to choose which output i want if i plug my 2.1 speakers into the Red & White RCA output and my headphone into the headphone out simultaneously?

You mean switch between your headset and speakers with the software?
ya, both the speakers and headphones plugged into sound card and does the software allow me to choose which output i want? Instead of having to plug in and out my headphones.
ok, got the xonar STX. Did some tweaking with the dolby headphone settings and it sounded damn good. I can even tell a difference with my entry level siberia v2 headset. Can't imagine how it'll be like if i were to use those high quality headphone instead of gaming headsets. lol
Grats!!! Welcome to the Asus Xonar family!! LOL All here using Asus Xonar. :P
